Colin Holyk, BSc (Pharm)

Colin was born and raised in Alberta and grew up in the pharmacy business. His father, Michael, owned a pharmacy in Westlock, Alberta and Colin spent most days after school working in the store.

The Holyk family moved to Vancouver in 1982, one year after Michael purchased the original Kerrisdale Pharmacy, located in the 2100 block of West 41st Avenue. Colin continued to work as a pharmacy technician at the pharmacy throughout his school years. He attended the University of British Columbia and received his pharmacy degree in 1990 and in June 1990 started work at Kerrisdale Pharmacy as a pharmacist. Michael and Colin decided to move the pharmacy in February of 1997 to its current location on West Boulevard and 40th Avenue. Colin became the Pharmacy Manager in 2000 and one year later purchased Hollyburn Pharmacy in West Vancouver with Michael Holyk.

In addition to his regular pharmacist duties, Colin is a Prescription Compounding Specialist and a certified compression stocking fitter.

Cristina Alarcon, BSc (Pharm)

Cristina is passionate about helping people. Her strong work ethic takes the meaning of holistic, integrative practice to a whole new level. Ask for advice, and she will always give you an honest assessment, saying what she means and meaning what she says.

Cristina obtained her bachelor's in pharmacy from the University of Montreal in 1990. After spending years working in the hospital setting in Montreal and Toronto, she moved out West and discovered her passion for the preventive side of medicine. She joined Hollyburn Pharmacy in April 2000 and has not looked back since. She became manager of Hollyburn in 2012.

In 2007, a love for professional ethics pushed Cristina to obtain a Bioethics Master's degree from the University of Navarre in Spain. She currently sits on the Ethics Advisory Committee of the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. She is also a clinical instructor for the University of British Columbia, and thoroughly enjoys mentoring pharmacy students.

Cristina has a compounding certificate from PCCA in Texas, and is passionate about midlife health and fitness. She is an avid swimmer, an aspiring writer, and a piano enthusiast.

Jyoti Thakore, BSc (Pharm)

Jyoti immigrated to Canada from India in 1969 and completed her education in the Faculty of Pharmacy at University of British Columbia.

She has been working at Hollyburn Pharmacy for the past 20 years after settling in West Vancouver with her family. Prior to that she was hospital pharmacist at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC and pharmacy manager at Eaton's.

She is a mother of 3 boys and a grandmother of 5 children. She has interest in children's health issues as well as in health issues of elderly people. She loves challenges and especially loves dealing with patients. She is certified to give injections and also trained to give palliative care treatment.

Jyoti loves travelling, reading, walking, hiking, and is actively involved with the West Vancouver New Comers Alumni club.

Queeny Lam, BSc (Pharm)

Queeny graduated from the University of British Columbia and has been in practice long enough to be well versed in many different clinical settings such as the hospital, retail, and long-term care.

She doesn't like to simply dispense medication at her patients; rather, she enjoys and recognizes the need to get to know her patients in order to best optimize their medication outcome.

Hollyburn Pharmacy provides her with the professional environment to deliver these services to her patients.

Nargis Karsan, BSc (Pharm)

Nargis received her Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of London in England in 1975. She moved to Canada later that year and started practicing as a staff pharmacist in Vancouver General Hospital in 1978. During her more than 30 years in hospital pharmacy, Nargis has been involved in a variety of duties that included being a pain management specialist for palliative patients and working as an out-patient pharmacist specializing in organ transplantation.

She also held the position of Manager of the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre Pharmacy for 7 years where she coordinated the Pharmacy Residency program.

Since 2000, Nargis has worked part-time at Kerrisdale Pharmacy's West Vancouver location (Hollyburn Pharmacy) and is now also working part-time at Kerrisdale Pharmacy. She continues to be tirelessly dedicated to the practice of pharmacy at both the Kerrisdale and Hollyburn locations.

In Memorandum - Michael Holyk, BSc (Pharm)

Michael was accepted into the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta, Edmonton in September 1956, graduating in April 1959.  He began his career at Groves Drug Store in Camrose, Alberta where he met his bride-to-be, Kathryn.

Working as a pharmacist in Camrose and then as a Pharmacy Manager in Edmonton, Michael gained valuable experience with a goal to eventually own a pharmacy. In March of 1963 an opportunity arose in Westlock, Alberta and Michael did just that; he opened his very own pharmacy called Holyk Drugs (eventually enlarging the store and renaming it Holyk Super Drug Mart).

In 1981 he packed up his family and moved after taking the opportunity to buy Kerrisdale Pharmacy in Vancouver. In 2001, along with his son Colin, Michael became the new owner of Hollyburn Pharmacy in West Vancouver.

On December 5th, 2012, after a year long battle with leukemia, Michael passed away with his family by his side.

Michael was a true professional who loved a challenge, loved his family and loved the Pharmacy profession.
